ExCeL London adds £80m hotel to expansion plans

ExCeL London is planning a new £80m hotel at the east end of its site. The hotel could be completed by the end of 2011. It would be in addition to the venue's second phase development plans.

The £164m second phase development got underway in October last year. It will increase the size of the current venue by more than 50%, taking it to 100,000m² and is expected to be completed by April 2010. The plans include a link to the Prince Regent DLR station, additional bars and restaurants and the creation of a 5,000-seat auditorium.

Outline planning permission has now been granted for a 280-room, four-star-plus property to compliment the extension.

ExCeL London currently has five on-site hotels including a Crowne Plaza, Novotel and Premier Inn. There are also more than 8,000 hotel rooms within 20 minutes of the venue including Marriott, Radisson Edwardian, Hilton and The Four Seasons.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "The creation of ExCeL London has played a major role in regenerating east London by attracting new businesses and bringing thousands of jobs to the area. Its expansion is just another example of how the 2012 Games are acting as a catalyst for change, to leave a lasting legacy and transform this area of the capital."

ExCeL London will host seven Olympic and five Paralympic events during the London 2012 Games.
